Discovering the Toxmate Machine for Real-Time Toxicity Monitoring

During our recent UrbanM2O consortium meeting in Switzerland, we went behind the scenes at the Urban Water Test Lab to see the Toxmate in action.

Our partner Didier Nace, CEO of Viewpoint, showed us how this incredible machine uses real-time biomonitoring to detect micropollutants. By tracking the behavior of three different species, the Toxmate can “feel” toxicity and alert us instantly—allowing for immediate action to protect the environment and human health.

Why Zürich?

Zürich is a data-rich “urban observatory,” but it faces real challenges from climate change and urban growth. By integrating the Toxmate into a Detailed Urban Water Twin (DUWT), Urban M2O is helping the city:

  • Monitor the impact of sewer overflows (CSOs) on river health.
  • Ensure the safety of groundwater, Switzerland’s main drinking water source.
  • Test the effectiveness of advanced treatment plants.
