From Vision to Reality: UrbanM2O Deploys First Sensors
The UrbanM20 project reached a significant milestone as the first physical sensors were officially deployed, marking the transition from strategic planning to on-the-ground implementation. On Thursday, April 9th 2026, Aqa.earth successfully installed the UrbanM20 sensor following a successful installation in Denmark just one day prior.
While the main installation window for the project is scheduled to begin in May, the team’s efficiency allowed for these first concrete steps to be taken ahead of schedule. This early momentum provides an encouraging foundation for the broader deployment phase across Europe.
How UrbanM2O Intervenes
The newly installed sensors will feed into an extensive network designed to monitor the impact of CSOs and stormwater on river health in real-time. By assessing how effectively advanced wastewater treatment plants remove contaminants, the project will help investigate the overall impact of the urban system on the aquatic environment.
The ultimate goal is the development of a highly detailed Digital Urban Water Twin (DUWT). This digital model will simulate pollution pathways and allow city officials to test future management strategies in a virtual environment before implementing them in the real world.
