New UrbanM2O conference paper maps future needs for urban water-quality monitoring
UrbanM2O has published a new conference proceeding entitled “What to measure? And how? – Mapping current and future needs for water quality monitoring in urban areas.”
The paper presents preliminary results from the project’s work to identify current and future water-quality monitoring requirements across Europe. Drawing on legislative reviews, stakeholder questionnaires and co-creation workshops, the research identifies important challenges including differences between EU and national regulations, fragmented data and data-sharing gaps, as well as emerging demand for high-resolution monitoring of chemical, microbial and microplastic contaminants.
The findings will support UrbanM2O in the development of next-generation, cost-effective and integrated monitoring and modelling solutions for water utilities and environmental authorities, contributing to more effective pollution control and more sustainable urban water systems.
The paper was presented at Novatech 2026 and authored by Luca Vezzaro, Vasileios Chrysochoidis, Chiara Farné Fratini, Henrik Dissing, Ivone Vaz Moreira, Magali Arboleda Rodallega and Mariane Yvonne Schneider.
